Did you know that a lack of vitamin D can lead to high cholesterol? It was news to me the first time I heard it. In this article, I hope to explain the importance of vitamin D for every single person. Then I’ll explain how a lack of vitamin D can raise your cholesterol levels. Finally, I’ll offer some thoughts on the best way if getting vitamin D into your cells and what might be preventing that from happening.
My Natural Energy Approach
Let me begin by acknowledging the obvious: I am not a medical doctor. I am speaking from my experience as a Kinesiologist and Natural Energy Coach. In my line of work, I see a lot of people who are deficient in vitamins and minerals like D.
I help you balance your D levels from a Natural Energy perspective. You might find my approach interesting and even wish to try it. But please do not make changes to your existing medical treatment without first consulting your doctor.
What Is Vitamin D?
Let me offer you one definition of Vitamin D taken from the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of India. The article was titled ‘The Emerging Role of Vitamin D3 in Women’s Health, written by Khadikar Suvarna Satish and published in June 2013. Satish explains that ‘vitamin D is a steroid prohormone’ – a fat soluble vitamin. Vitamin D ‘is synthesised in the skin under ultra-violet light exposure. Biosynthesis can by inadequate due to poor diet and poor absorption in the gut or poor exposure to UVB sunlight.

Vitamin D – We Can’t Live Without It
While some of us always knew about the importance of vitamin D for good immune health, it wasn’t until COVID that Vitamin D got to take centre stage in helping with long term immune health. But did you know that every single one of your trillions of cells has a vitamin D receptor on it? That means that every single cell needs vitamin D – every single day.
When the cells do not get enough vitamin D or the cell receptors cannot open to take in the vitamin D then your body will begin to tell the tale.
The Sun & Vitamin D
While the sun is a way of getting natural vitamin D Synthesis, in winter there is little or no natural vitamin D synthesis, due to the very little daylight and sunlight exposure. Also the sun is so low in the sky, the synthesis is not as effective as during the summer.
You already know how this all works. Think of how you feel in the summer. You have more energy, less health issues, etc. In the winter life gets harder to handle, your mood can change a lot, you are fatigued more often and you end up sick. Raise your vitamin D levels and change your diet and you might notice a few differences.
Cholesterol And Vitamin D
When your cells are not getting enough vitamin D, they send out a message to your body to try to create it. One of the quickest ways to get vitamin D is to boost production of cholesterol. Yes, cholesterol contains vitamin D – and believe it or not oestrogen! Low vitamin D/low oestrogen in your body will trigger a higher production of cholesterol – this is why a lot of women can present with high cholesterol and osteopenia in menopause years, especially during winter and could all be down to low vitamin D levels and low vitamin D absorption.
Cholesterol And The Liver
The Liver is an amazing organ. It has so many physical and energy functions that it can easily get over-worked and over-heated. One job of the liver is to regulate and recycle cholesterol – turning the ‘bad’ cholesterol to ‘good’ cholesterol. When you have too much cholesterol in your system, the liver will get overwhelmed and over worked and not be able to do this very important job.
Trans Fats Don’t Help Vitamin D Absorption
When the liver is not able to effectively convert or recycle cholesterol then it will also not be able to manage all the fats that you take into your body each day. Trans fats are well documented as being the main type of fats that really cause the liver stress.
Processed foods will generally contain a combination of trans fats and processed sugars – a lethal combination. When the liver is under a lot of stress there will be a knock-on affect for the rest of the body and especially the digestive system, liver function and thyroid and para-thyroid function.
Oils Turn Rancid
One of the greatest problems when it comes to taking oils, is to make sure they are not turning rancid. Oils that come in clear bottles have little hope of holding their purity. Day light can get at the oil and turn it rancid very quickly. Having oils where they can over heat is another sure way of turning it rancid, as it the whole heating and cooling of oils.
How To Keep Oils
You want purchase oils that are in dark bottles and are organic and cold pressed. It is also important to keep all of your oils in a cool dark place, especially omega oils and fat soluble vitamin oils. This is one of the reasons I like to get my oils in Miron Violet Glass from Epigenetics.
Oils From Epigenetics
The team at Epigenetics work hard to source the best vitamin D in oil form and bottle it as close to source as they can. By bottling their oils in Miron Glass, which only allows in the healing rays of the sun and keeps out harmful rays, Epigenetics ensure a longer life span of their oils than most other suppliers can.
Miron Violet Glass is the only coloured glass that has been proven to prolong and enhance the life of what is inside the bottle. This will help to prolong the life of the oils.
Epigenetics & Vitamin D
Epigenetics have done a lot of research on vitamin D. The team have researched how best to absorb D, and now understand what other oils and nutrition will help your cell receptors open to receive the vitamin D from your diet and supplements.
There are many oils that contain various strands of vitamin D.
How will you know which oil suits your body and how much of that oil you need to take. Attending a kinesiologist can help you find out exactly which form of vitamin D will work for you and how much to take. This is done energetically through a muscle testing/energy feedback system.
The Vitamin Oils Challenge
I have clients arrive to me having had blood tests done to be told that they have high cholesterol, low vitamin D, low thyroid/high parathyroid function and they are also feeling under the weather, perhaps a little depressed or anxious. It’s amazing how one or two months on supplements like vitamin D and Magnesium while also cleaning processed foods out of the diet can really transform a persons life.
Other Sources Of Vitamin D3
In winter time it is virtually impossible for us to get enough D synthesis from the sun. That is because the days are much shorter with a lot less daylight time. This means it is virtually impossible for those who work in doors all day, to any vitamin D synthesis from the sun.
But also, the sun doesn’t rise above 45 degrees in the sky from autumn equinox to spring equinox.
It is important to get vitamin D from other sources. Here is a list of some foods that provide vitamin D3:
- Tuna
- Turbot
- Duck Eggs
- Sheep Cheese
- Organic Ghee
- Beef Liver
- Cod Liver Oil
- Salmon
- Herring, Sardines, Mackerel
- Liver Pate
- Egg Yollks
- Irradiated Mushrooms
- Oysters
- Cocoa Husks
- Orange Juice
- Oats
- Butter
- Sour Cream
Having these foods in your diet will help you to naturally maintain better levels of D in your cells. The trick is to get the vitamin D into you cells. The cell membrane absorbs oils and that is why oils are the best form of vitamin D supplement to take. You can of course take tablet form vitamin D and yes, a blood test will show that you have D in your blood, but is that D getting into your cell membrane through the cells vitamin D receptor?
This is the crucial and most important part of taking any nutritional supplement or any food, is it getting to where it needs to go in your body and is it then getting broken down and absorbed properly.
What Stops Good Vitamin D Absorption
AGE: As we get older and the toxins mount in our system, we can begin to lack the ability to absorb properly.
Stress is another key reason why many do not absorb the goodness from our food or supplements. When you are triggering a stress response, your digestive system is basically shut down. When this happens, you cannot digest and absorb your food properly.
Toxins are one of the key reasons why you won’t absorb your vitamin D or any other vitamin, mineral, Amino acid, oil… Toxins come in so many forms:
- Sugar (sweets, cakes, buns, etc) is ACID – Acid prevents cells from oxygenating and working.
- Alcohol
- Caffine
- Metals that are in foods (through pesticide and other sprays), water and vaccines
- Cosmetics
- Soft drinks
- Trans Fats
- Processed foods
- Too much blue light exposure
- Too many radioactive signals
- Medications can prevent the absorption of vitamin D in the body as the toxins from the medications can block the D receptors from working.
You and I also produce Toxins as a natural by-product of living. Too much exercise, too many sports injuries, unresolved traumatic events, the stress response, too little exercise, not enough water intake, from eating the wrong foods, not getting enough sleep, etc – these are all ways of preventing our body from working properly and so absorbing and using all the natural goodness in our energy.
Winter Sun Holidays
Of course there are parts of the world you could go to for your sun synthesis during the winter, but you will have to travel far! On a sunny day you will benefit from being outside in the Irish winter – You get your lungs filled with fresh air, the pineal gland gets stimulated, your whole natural rhythm will get boosted.
Seaside Visits
Going to the seaside and getting some Vitamin Sea is another great way to balance and boost your energy. Being an energist, I know how naturally healing it is to just be by the seaside. But during the winter you will need to take a vitamin D supplement.
In Conclusion
Vitamin D is essential for your wellness. Some people need a vitamin D supplement all year round. This can be the case for many reasons. Sugar will block your vitamin D receptors from working properly. Sugar prevents all your cells from working properly.
Toxins in your system can also prevent your cell receptors from being able to open up and absorb the vitamin d you have taken. While stress can be the greatest disrupter when it comes to absorbing your vitamins and minerals.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. The best way to take it is in oil form, and there are many foods listed in this article that will also feed you essential vitamin D.
