Have you every suffered from Anxiety? Have you ever felt that uncontrollable urge to run, to get away, to be safe or to just stop the awful feeling you area having? I have, and it was one of the greatest debilitating experiences of my life. I could be standing in my own kitchen or bedroom and I’d still want to run.
Non-Trigger Panic Attacks left me stuck to a wall with my heart racing, my stomach doing summer salts and an overwhelming sense that I had to get away or I’d be violently sick.
Anxiety States Block Logical Thinking.
Many years on I now know that when I’m anxious, it is an indication that I am over-stressed. So overstressed, that my neurotransmitters have gone out of balance and I am fluctuating between a state of panic and feeling depressed.
I actually knew all this information when I was having these panic attacks. But, when you are in a panic attack nothing is logical, because the blood supply to the logical part of the brain gets diverted to the automatic subconscious part of the brain.
Nothing seemed to keep me steady. My doctor wanted me to go on medication and I did for a few months. While this did calm the attacks I didn’t feel myself at all. I came off the medication as soon as I could and the attacks came back but much worse.
Stress Causes Anxiety
Did you know that stress is what really causes anxiety attacks. I’m not just referring to the normal day to day stress, but when you are triggering an automatic stress response all of the time. Most of us don’t know that we are triggering this stress response all of the time because we have got so used to it we don’t realise it is happening anymore. You even think that your way of operating or coping or managing is normal for you.
Overstressed States Overload You With Hormones
When you are in an ‘always on’ overstressed state, you will get overloaded with stress hormones. These clog up and lower your energy vibration. When we are in the constant stress response for a long period of time, the result will be anxiety attacks also known as panic attacks. You will even go between a state of anxiety and depression because all your neurotransmitters are way out of balance.
When You Are Overstressed You Cannot Think Straight
In this overstressed state, you lose your ability to engage your conscious logical brain. it is the logical thinking part that accesses all the logical thoughts like: I’m okay, I got this, I can get through this.
When the automatic brain is in control the oldest, strongest and normally negative dominant thoughts tend to run the show. These generally tend to be from your younger years, hence why you can use language like, I can’t cope, or I can’t do this.
But if you could access the logical part of the brain, it will even be able to tell you that you are having a panic attack and it will pass.
When you are in the eye of the storm of the panic attack, you genuinely feel there is no logical answer and you really need to run away. This is totally normal and natural. Your body is in an overstressed state and it needs you to get out of the situation that has triggered this state (the perceived danger), so it can try and calm down.
Tapping Calmed my Over-Stressed Anxiety Attacks
Tapping literally calmed me right down. Not only that, I have not had a non-trigger panic since I began Tapping. Yes I do get over stressed but I can quickly calm that response and get back to a more balanced and focused me.
4 Steps For Retuning Your Anxiety States
Here are the four steps that I use to help me retune my stress so I don’t reach that anxiety state. You can read more about them in my book: Tap Into Success.
Step One – Setting Your Mind To Have An Attitude of Success
- Get a copy book or journal and two different coloured pens.
- Set a timer for 2 minutes.
- With one of your coloured pens, write down every single negative thought you have – just the thought, not the whole situation.
- These thoughts could be about yourself, others, past or current events, etc.
- Don’t hold back, write them all down.
- Then imagine you have a magic wand and you can wave it and turn all these negative thoughts/beliefs into positive ones.
- Take your second pen with a different colour and write down all the positive thoughts that come into your head. The thoughts you really want to think all of the time.
Step Two – Measuring The Power of Your Beliefs
Now you are going to rate all your thoughts on a scale that ranges from -5 (most negative0 to +5 (most positive) with neutral thoughts being around zero (in the middle)
You are looking to see which is your strongest negative thought and your strongest positive thought. If you have more than one thought at -5 and +5 rate them again until you have the single most dominant negative and positive thought.
From Your Lists You Are Going To Create 3 Thoughts:
First thought – The most negative thought from your list and example might be: “I truly hate myself.”
Second thought – “Even though I hate myself (your most negative thought goes here), right now I truly am okay.”
Third thought – The most positive thought from your list. Here’s an example: “I truly love myself.”
Step Three – Connecting Into Your Power Centre
Next place your hands on your Solar Plexus, close your mouth and Breathe while thinking the second thought – ‘Even though I hate myself, I truly am okay’. Do this for at least three breaths.
Step Four – Tapping Your Energy Back Into Balance
Now you are going to tap three rounds of an Advanced Tapping System – 1 round for each of the scripts above. In the video accompanying this post I show you 1 round of this Tapping System. In my book: Tap Into Success, I offer you pictures of the Tapping system as well as a written description.
