Winter Solstice is on its way. That is the thought I have had every morning since the beginning of December. I’m a seasonal being. I can really find the darkness and cold of the winter time very difficult each year. This is why I can be really enthusiastic around the time of the turning sun at winter solstice.
I love the image of this side of the earth beginning to slowly turn from the dark towards the light again. It just fills my entire being with hope and joy. I feel energised at even the thought of the days getting brighter. I also feel so grateful that I get another chance to grow into the light.
Our Ancestors Celebrated The Darkness
Our Celtic ancestors celebrated this time of turning sun with great reverence and joy. They too delighted in being half way through another winter. Given how much more severe winter would have been thousands of years ago, I can totally understand why they had their light/fire rituals -honouring how important the sun was in their lives.
Celebrating Light in Winter
Winter Solstice is celebrated on the 21st December. I like to take time each day leading up to the solstice just to be present to the amazing sun energy, even on these darker days. Being such a seasonal energy being I feel this strong urge to go deeply into a hibernating space. I sense the invitation of the dark, damp and wet weather calling me to go inside and rest.
Like the outer energy of the winter season, my energy can naturally feel heavy and low. I sometimes liken it to being dark inside just as it is on the outside. I think this is quite a natural state as our ancestors had more chance of surviving the winter when they stayed inside, wrapped up and resting.
Darkness Magnifies Depression and Anxiety
Looking back on my life, I can see how I used to run from any darkness. I think I was afraid that if I went into this darker space I wouldn’t be able to get out of it. So I would busy myself with things to do, people to see, courses, anything to keep me from spending time in a darker place. I didn’t like facing darkness in my life. I probably was afraid of the darkness – my darkness or even my shadow side.
When you get over-stressed you will trigger past unresolved hurts. This can lead to periods of depression, anxiety and maybe both. Now, I can say that I was quite overstressed in my life – from childhood. This is probably why I could not feel comfortable with winter calling me to slow down.
When you are always on the ‘go, go, go’ needing to ‘do, do, do’ and end up fixing things for everyone but yourself you will run out of energy. You will eventually be so out of balance that you will end up right in the darkest space ever.
That is what happened to me. I got so stressed that my whole energy system eventually shut down and I was landed into pure darkness all year round – the very place I was trying so hard to avoid. This real energy of pure darkness lasted for quite some years.
The Darkest Day Shows The Strength Of Your Inner Light
It might sound funny, but I got out of that dark place by listening to and honouring all that was my darkness. That was not an easy journey that took years. It was probably made longer because of the continued triggering of the over-stressed state that I was in, since childhood.
Energy Healing Worked For Me
Thanks to a combination of many therapies, including psychotherapy, Kinesiology, Energy Work and Tapping, I have retuned that over-stressed state. Now, I am able to honour the darkness each winter. I still feel that inner connection to the winter darkness, but it feels more natural and transitional and I see it as a time for inner compassion. I know that the sun is turning and soon I will be back on the brighter side of the sun again.
My Challenge To See The Light
With all this talk of winter and darkness I could forget the key best part of honouring darkness – to really see the power of the light. Sometimes the greatest challenge is to see the light and let it shine through, even in your darkest and hardest days.
Light is truly powerful. It is transformational. Even just thinking of the phrase “faster than the speed of light” conjures up images of an amazing energy vibration. That amazing vibration is what makes up you and me and every part of our whole universe.
Your Thoughts Can Brighten Your Light
The thought you are thinking right now can bring light or darkness to your energy. A negative thought will lower your energy (light) vibration, just as a positive thought can raise your energy. Just one thought can cause you to trigger a stress response or a wellness benefit and it can all happen subconsciously within seconds.
Tapping Brought Lasting Light Into My Darkness
Tapping calmed that stress response in me and now I have no more panic attacks. I do still feel the pull of the changing seasons and that is natural and normal. But, I am not over-stressed or anxious all the time. I find daily Tapping brings great energy retuning and with Two Meridian Tapping, there is a rounded and grounded sense of calm and wellness – who doesn’t need this in the winter?

My Winter Invitation
As you approach this winter Solstice time of the turning sun, I invite you to stop, take a breath and celebrate how the light shines through even the darkest of nights. Acknowledge that you need light in your life. Acknowledge all the light that is in your own life – sometimes this can be really hard to do. Focus on positive people, words, places, faith in the Divine. Feel hope in your darkness and give thanks. Remember, without the darkness you would not know the true power of the light.
